Odyssey of the Mind (OM)

Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a competition for students in grades K – 12 who form a collaborative team to solve a long term problem as well as spontaneous problems.  Teams usually meet once a week from November – March. In March, there is a regional competition. The location of the competition shall be located somewhere within our region.  The competition is usually held the second or third Saturday in March. It is required that all OM team participants must be in attendance at each practice and the regional competition in March.

Attached are the long term problems that OM has released for this year!  There is no upfront cost for the students to join an OM team but there may be cost for group materials (to be determined at a later date).  Teams would choose ONE problem to solve. They will work on it from November – March. During these practices, students will also practice “spontaneous problems.”  These problems are getting the students prepared to think on their feet, because at the competition students will go into a room together and be presented with a problem that needs a quick solution!  It’s spontaneous in the fact that no one knows what the problem will be until it is presented to the students on the day of the competition! They must be ready for anything!

Teams consist of 5 – 7 students.  A team must have at least 5 students and no more than 7 to compete.  Teams must have two coaches that are adult volunteers. This year, OM will be run a little differently.  Once teams are created by the TAG teacher, (based off of the interest survey listed below) the parents of those 5-7 students will need to determine who the coaches will be and which day works best for the team to get together to practice.  Practices need to occur directly after school (3:15 - end time decided by the parents/coaches).

By November 21st, if your child is interested in OM, or you’re interested in coaching, please fill out the following form. It’s just 5 quick questions:  https://forms.gle/daV7J6nuWHhwYAhp8

The window for form responses closes on November 21st.  All interested participants’ parents/guardians  will be contacted by the TAG teacher.

OM can’t happen without your help and the interest of your child.  Please email me and let me know if you have any questions: waldrojc@lcps.k12.va.us  or call me at (540) 967-1108 extension is 5126.
